Świdnica-Rieti 2011

In April 2011 we hosted in Świdnica the students from Italian school in Rieti. They had an opportunity to see our town and region. They visited Książ Castle and the Cathedral of Świdnica. Italians could also taste the traditional Polish dishes like ‘pierogi’ and ‘bigos’. After the week spent together we were looking forward to the second phase of the exchange. On 18 October the group of 13 students and 2 teachers went to Rieti. The stay was awesome. We visited plenty of places including Rieti and the most important monuments of Rome- the Pantheon, the Coliseum and the Capitol. We were always accompanied by the guides who in an interesting way told us about the historical buildings, of course in English.

During our journey we got to know with the Italian traditions: siesta, educational system, cuisine etc. We ate so much but it would have been impolite if we had refused, assuming that the Italian moms waited for the comments on the dishes they prepared. We were served different kinds of pizzas and spaghetti. But the most important part of the exchange was the integration, which was really very good. Almost every evening we spent together and we did not experience any barriers between Polish and Italians. On 25 October we left Rieti with tears in our eyes and the promise that we would meet in the future. With our Italian friends we still have contact via Facebook.

Tuesday, 18 October

Our trip to Italy started on Tuesday morning about 7 am at the train station in Jaworzyna. We went from there by train to Wrocław and then from Wrocław to Kraków. During the journey we were talking about our plans connected with the exchange and looking back to the stay of Italians in our houses. In Kraków we went straightly to the airport. We repacked our luggage because it was too heavy (the limit was only 15 kg ). Then we checked-in and went to the departure lounge. There we did some shopping. At 5.40 pm we boarded and a few minutes later the plane took off. About 7 pm we landed in Rome. Our Italian friends were waiting for us at the airport. We got to Rieti by bus. During the journey each of us was worried because we did not know if the Italian families would like us. When we finally met in the main hall of the school, we felt very welcome in Rieti. We were taken home to have a rest before the next day.

Wednesday, 19 October

We started Wednesday with visiting the school. Then we attended a maths lesson. In the middle of the day we showed a multimedia presentation of our region, town and school. The Italians were very impressed, and awarded us with a big round of applause. We had also an opportunity to visit Rieti. We saw a lot of interesting places: Ponte Romano – the main bridge in the city, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele with a beautiful fountain, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assusta and also the square considered to be the centre of Italy. In the evening, we went out together to a pub, and spent there a really good time, tightening up our relations and improving English.

Thursday, 20 October

On Thursday there was our first trip to Rome. We were very excited to see the capital city of Italy. Although there were some problems with flooded roads, we managed to get there. Our sightseeing started with visiting Santa Maria del Poppolo Church, where we saw the paintings of Caravaggio. Next we had an opportunity to walk down the famous Spanish Steps. The Trevi Fountain made a huge impression on all of us. Then we went to 4-D cinema to watch a movie about the history of Rome. The last part of our trip was the Vatican City. We admired Saint Peter’s Basilica and Angel’s Castle. Exhausted but full of great memories, we went back to our Italian homes.

Friday, 21 October

We started Friday with a lesson in the laboratory where we did some chemical experiments. In the physics lesson we observed the phenomenon of light diffraction. A biology lesson really impressed us as we had an opportunity to observe mold bacteria. We were obliged to wear protective clothes to avoid being infected. The day ended up with a common dinner in the restaurant owned by father of the girl who took part in the exchange. We were treated to delicious traditional Italian cuisine. The evening was a great success.

Saturday, 22 October

The day began with a school quiz of the novel ‘The Portrait of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. The Italian team proved to be better. Then we went to the sports hall to play two friendly games. The boys showed their spectacular football abilities. Shortly after the girls gave a stunning volleyball performance. After lunch the whole group met in the city centre. We visited some cafés, shops and then we had a sightseeing tour of Rieti, during which we witnessed a parade of the local orchestra playing the wind instruments. They performed on the famous bridge erected by Romans in ancient times. That afternoon the streets were flooded with people so we made some new friends. In order to get to know each other better we spent the rest of the evening in a bar…

Sunday, 23 October

All of us spent Sunday with our Italian families. They had planned many attractions for us, among which was a chance to sleep a little while longer. Some of us, even though the weather was not perfect, went for a hiking trip to the mountains, others spent the day by the lake and the rest met at Luca’s house and played Wii. In the evening the whole group went out to play bowling and billiard. A friendly rivalry turned out to be a good way to tighten Polish-Italian ties.

Monday, 24 October

On Monday we had another trip to Rome. This time we started with visiting the Coliseum. The Flavius’s Amphitheatre really impressed us. We spent there more than an hour with an awesome guide who told us a lot of interesting things. Then we went on a bus tour to see a few more monuments of ancient Rome. After that we went to the Capitol, from which we saw a beautiful view of the city. In the afternoon we had a free time. We did some shopping and spent a lot of time watching street performers at Piazza del Poppolo. The day ended up with dinner at Italian homes.

Tuesday, 25 October

The last day of our exchange began very early. When we had packed our luggage, we met with our Italian friends at school. We spent the time watching photos from our stay in Rieti. Some of them were very funny, so we laughed at them for a very long time. On the last day of our stay the representative of Intercultura visited us and gave us some presents. At 10 we had to go the airport in Rome by bus, but it was very hard for us to leave because we spent in Rieti a lot of unforgettable moments. At 12 we were in Rome. At the airport we were repacking our luggage for more than an hour so that it weighed less than 15 kg. It wasn’t easy because everybody had the luggage loaded with the presents and goodies. The departure was at 3pm. The return trip was long and tiring because from Cracow we had to go by train to Wrocław, where we were picked up by our parents who missed us a lot.
